Dolly Ridge Subdivision

Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Completed: 2006
Cost: $2 million

This 47-lot subdivision lays on both the north and south sides of a ridge which towers 130 feet above the surrounding neighborhood and roadway.  The developer required that the existing ridge remain at its original height so that it would continue to serve as a noise and visual barrier between the neighbors to the north and the interstate highway to the south. With close coordination among LBYD, the developer, the geotechnical engineer and the earthwork contractor, cut slopes on the north and south sides of the ridge, fill slopes and natural areas remaining undisturbed struck the balance required among aesthetics, economy of construction and lot yield to allow the project to succeed.  The project also included a bottomless culvert design to avoid disturbance of an existing creek.
