St. Vincent ‘s Hospital Women’s and Children’s Center 5-level parking deck features a post-tensioned beam and slab system. The 2-story hospital and 3-story professional office building are built above the deck.  The patient access plaza area consists of a 20,000 square foot elevated framed roadway between the existing and new hospital.  It serves multiple purposes, providing an entrance to the top level of the new parking deck, protected patient pick-up and drop-off, covered pedestrian walks between buildings, and emergency fire service access to the new hospital.  The framing system for the roadway is pre-stressed highway girders.  They are supported by an abutment at the south end, and on a conventionally cast-in-place girder at the north end.

The original renovation of the Birmingham International Airport included a 7-level, 1,000-space parking deck expansion.  Also included were the complete renovation of the 244,000 square foot passenger terminal with the addition of 20,000 square feet and 4 arrival/departure gates and construction of 1,800 feet of elevated four-lane roadway with 1,000 square feet of canopy covering departure passengers.  A 7-level, 2,200-space addition to the parking deck was completed in 1999.

The newest renovation, currently in design and scheduled to be complete in 2011, will include the parking deck connections and walkways at 3 of the existing parking deck connectors.  New elevators accessing each floor of the parking deck will be added at the connectors and a canopy will be added to cover the connectors and walkways.  The upgrade will also include a terminal and concourse expansion and renovation.  The terminal expansion and new concourse will add approximately 230,000 square feet of floor space.  Renovation of the terminal and concourse will include a new roofing system, complete new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, new passenger elevators, escalators and stairs and complete exterior skin replacement.  The upgrade will accommodate new equipment for baggage handling, passenger and baggage screening and concessions.
